What is Lyme Disease?
The first case of Erithema Migrans was reported in 1970, in Lyme, Connecticut and its cause was reported to be a Tick . In 1977 Steer and Collaborators detected an outbreak of Juvenile Arthritis in Connecticut. In 1978 the relationship between Arthritis, Face Paralysis and the and tick bite was established. In 1982 Burdorferi and collaborators isolated the ethiologic agent of the Ixodes Tick, a spirochaete that is now known as Borrelia Burgdorferi. At the beginning treatment with penicillin was given which showed improvement in the disease.
My first case of lyme disease was about 20 years ago , a young 18 year old girl that came in for consult had been already diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis. I had been reading up on lyme disease , and I decided to treat this patient with a month of antibiotics. Within the first month patient showed 50 % improvement, and to this day patient is now asymptomatic.
Lyme Disease Diagnostic Criteria
The CDC in the United States since 1991 demands that the diagnosis be made on the following requirements: patient has to have had contact or been in an endemic area, clinical evidence of eithema migrans or confirmations through lab analysis, as well as neurologic, musculoskeletal or cardiac symptoms.
With these requirements, very little diagnosis can be made. Many of these patients have never been to Connecticut, never been anywhere near deer or visited any farms. In my many years of practice I have only seen less than ten cases Erythema Migrans.
In our consultation we almost have 10% of patients that you/they mention us that Arthritic, Neurological Psychiatrics or problems present, immediately we practice them the modified Questionnaire of Dr. Burrascano and if the symptoms are enough, immediately we classify them as patient with borreliosis or lyme disease and after making them Rx, Laboratory, Ultrasonidos, or what needs, begins them treatment, verifying that the great majority you begins to improve considerably after the first month that arrives to consultation, the appointment it is monthly until their cure for 3 to 6 months, later it is strange that the patient returns for new treatment, that is to say that is cured permanently.
If one doesn't make the Diagnose, the patient is a correspondent with the Rheumatologist, Oculist, Cardiologist, Otorrino, Internist, Gynecologist, etc. and ultimately the I Prescribe they don't know what she has and they tell him/her that you/he/she is Stress or that you/he/she is her imagination and the patient is a correspondent with THE PSYCHIATRIST.
Lyme Disease Symptoms
The classic symptom is that the patient refers that after a tick bite they present with a round lesion or target lesion that grows up to 5 cm. Patient also presents erithema migrans and unspecific cold symptoms.
The symptoms of lyme disease are so many that it is hard to diagnose at times because the patient can present with Heart problems, Neurological problems, muscular, or Psychiatric problems.
Some of the frequent symptoms are; Migraines, Discal hernias, Arthritis, Facial Paralysis, Sicknesses, Depression, Irritability, Insomnia.
At any moment, whether it be at the beginning or long after the first tick bite, Arthritis with migratory arthralgias can appear , along with Hydrarthrosis (swelling of joints because of excess fluid ) of the hands and in the knees. Usually it is wrongly diagnosed and patient will get steroid shots in these joint to try to reduce the inflammation, which at first may help but later on will not cure it completely.
Lyme Disease Transmission
A patient with lyme disease can be contaminated through his/her mother or any time in their life. The symptoms can vary at first, they can be minimal or in some cases even severe. As with Syphilis, it can have a period of latency of months until years so that the first symptoms are manifested. Borreliosis or lyme illness is transmitted by bite of a contaminated insect or transfusion of blood, but I find absurd that the great majority of doctors mention only the famous tick without mentioning that any other insect that has contact with blood like the mosquito, bedbugs, body and hair lice, etc.
Hospital Mexico Treatment
Our lyme disease treatment is only with ANTIBIOTICS . The duration of the treatment is from four to six months, but the patient has to come once a month in order to see the progress. Depending on each patient, some of the antibiotics used are Tetracycline, Penicillin, and Clarythromicin.
The diagnosis of lyme disease is increasing each year because there are more doctors now that have a better understanding of what this disease is. It is also our obligation to give out as much information as we can about this disease to our patients, friends and family members. I only have to ask : Do you have headaches, back pain, dizziness, insomnia? You will realize the amount of people with these symptoms. he/she will realize the quantity of patients that there are around us.
Our Hospital is one of the few places in the world with patients with migraine, arthritis, lower back pain and facial paralysis that can be cured. Lyme disease can be cured.
The location of Hospital Mexico in Tijuana is strategic as it is just few steps from the International Border, you can park your car on the US side and walk across to Tijuana arriving at the hospital in a few minutes.
